Bundesbank Tests ZKsync Prividium as Matter Labs Open-Sources Institutional Engine
Matter Labs said on September 8 it had open-sourced Prividium’s permissioning engine, making the core software available for institutions to run, inspect and modify in their own environments. Deutsche Bundesbank is the first institution testing and deploying the engine within its own infrastructure, according to a report by The Block.

The move shifts a central part of Matter Labs’ institutional blockchain offering from vendor-controlled software to publicly available code. It gives organisations such as banks a route to operate the permissioning layer in their own technical environments while retaining access to commercial tooling where needed.
Bundesbank tests Prividium’s newly open-source permissioning engine
The September 8 announcement from ZKsync said Prividium’s permissioning engine had been released as open-source software. Matter Labs develops ZKsync.
Bundesbank’s reported testing and deployment make it the first disclosed institutional user of the newly open-source engine. The available reporting does not detail the scope of the central bank’s testing, the applications involved or a timetable for any broader use.
For institutions evaluating permissioned blockchain infrastructure, the release means the relevant core code can be examined and altered internally rather than being accessed solely through a proprietary arrangement with its developer.
Open-source core separates chain operation from commercial tooling
The engine is planned as a standalone component, allowing institutions to operate a permissioned chain from public code without entering a commercial agreement, The Block reported.
Matter Labs is not making the entire institutional package freely available: administration tools and integrations remain commercial products. Institutions may therefore retain direct control over the core infrastructure while using third-party software for management or connectivity; access to the engine alone does not determine how a deployment will be configured, governed or integrated.

Privacy and Ethereum settlement
Prividium is designed to keep transaction data inside an institution’s infrastructure, verify transaction correctness with zero-knowledge proofs and anchor settlement to Ethereum, according to Matter Labs’ technology description.
Only the permissioning engine is covered by the open-source release; administration tools and integrations remain commercial products outside that core.
